It's 1800s Scotland, and Josie is now a sixteen-year-old orphan. While it wasn't AMAZING, I was entranced and engrossed and I couldn't put this book down. Still, I finished this book quickly and was very engrossed in the novel. This book was incredibly short! While the timing for a short book was great, it was also not the best for the story, which really felt short (and not necessarily in a good way). An author's note gives the historical inspiration for this story. Spirited, curious, and determined, Josie sets out to learn the village's secrets and discovers evil, fueled by heartless greed, as well as a ghostly presence eager for revenge. She's told that Eli, the young man she's attracted to, is forbidden to her, but not why. Everything and everyone in her new surroundings, including her relatives, is sinister, threatening, and mysterious. In early-nineteenth century Scotland, sixteen-year-old Josie, an orphan, is sent to live with an aunt and uncle on the rocky, stormy northwest coast. *** Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog*** True to form for Feeney, ROCK PAPER SCISSORS is a domestic suspense novel that stands out thanks to a masterful twist (or two, or maybe more…) and vividly-drawn characters who leap off the page. Or the love that's mixed with piss and can't be separated from it. Frog Music is the best kind of historical fiction: as authentic in its emotions and characterizations as it is in its archival details. Donoghue is so gifted at depicting the fraught blessings of motherhood: "Pressing her boy to her," Blanche feels a "surge of warmth, and this time she remembers what it means: not love but piss. As in "Room," however, the redeeming legacy of a terrible sequence of violence is the bond between a mother and a son, and it's in the tentative moments of love between Blanche and P'tit that "Frog Music" is at its best - heartfelt, affecting, and real. It's partly this choice that leads to Jenny's death. When Blanche takes the time to discover the true circumstances in which P'tit has been living, in a brutal baby mill, her uncertain maternal instincts are kindled, and she brings him home. ("She's just done forty days for those pants," Blanche tells Arthur on the night she meets Jenny.) That explains their affinity, and also why in their brief acquaintance Jenny galvanizes Blanche to question her life, most pointedly by asking about her neglect of her son. Both Blanche and Jenny are examples of this, women of independent thought and sexual feeling, and both - like the doomed protagonist of the excellent "Slammerkin" - forced to find expression for it in part through clothing. Donoghue's career shows an abiding interest in the ways that history has found to punish women for being themselves. More than a century before Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg became legendary for her biting dissents, Justice John Marshall Harlan I was the original notorious dissenter. And he was surely correct in understanding that the equal protection clause must mean that one race never can be superior or subordinate to another. He was prescient in recognizing the need for a strong national government to deal with urgent issues, such as civil rights.
